Better the devil you know

Wendigos and what-ifs. Lucifer and lost chances. Demons and diverging timelines.

This week our dreams were dominated by dark spirits. Perhaps undone in their malignant chaos, the threads of recent world events frayed.

When we weren’t busy being pinned to our pillows by looming shadow creatures, we saw political history rewritten.

Devils came in all shapes and sized. All genders, races, and cultures. From traditional Churel hauntings, to satanic panic pentagons carved into flesh.

A tall demon jumps out from behind a door. A skinny one lurks under bed sheets. They grabbed at us through mirrors, impregnated us with snakes, and possessed our mom.

In the midst of these nightmares, we dared to imagine a more beautiful waking world.

Donald Trump doesn’t meet Stormy. Covid is caught in time. Russian tensions are romantically soothed. Liz Truss makes cosy peace with her leadership usurper, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

A sleep paralysis demon threatened me and extorted me with a thick New Jersey accent. I found it internally hilarious, so I let him continue.

Eventually, he pushed his finger down my ear, but it wasn't painful. As this happened, my vision zoomed out as if I was falling into a void until it became total darkness.
