Double take

Animals lined up two by two and marched through our dreams. Cat couples, turtle tandems, dog duos. Rats, alligators, and snakes. No matter the species, they were not alone.

Although perhaps they would have preferred to be. The animal marriages were not peaceful ones. Dreamers witnessed teeth bared and feathers fly.

One dog becomes a unrestrained wolf, tearing at its canine companion. A corvid pecks its mate to death. Snakes swallow one another.

Humans were not except from the two-ness of it all. Dreamers met their own clones and got lost in mirrors as reflections of themselves.

The veil between this life and the next was fraying at the edges this week. Visitations from departed loved ones were much higher than usual. For the most part, bringing comfort.

I dreamed of two people dying who I don’t know. My sister said “they are almost here” and went to lock everything and my grandmother (who passed away) put her arm around me so I didn’t see the body. We went to lock the door. My grandmother had a knife of her hand and so did I.

I put two fingers up “saying two in one day” my grandma nodded slowly and we looked at the door and there was a bony hand coming through an unlocked the door.
